Here we are in the first scripture portion that really says something we are most likely familiar with, regarding Christ’s return for his saints before the tribulation. Most likely, the primary reason for people delving into the two books of Thessalonians. We should also hear echoes of other Gospel passages like Matthew 24:1-24 or the similar passages also found in Mark and Luke. Never mind many other scripture passages in the New Testament alone!

This way of speaking is used frequently both in the Old and the New Testament; and very often with the Targumists; because there is a likeness between sleep and death…”. When was the last time you were taught anything by God as scripture speaks here?! We also can note that the teaching from God was “…to love one another”! It would appear, for us today, this applies to what we, in the States at least, call, “the body”, referring to our local church of attendance by us. How we approach church life and daily life seemingly is in contradiction, here in scripture. However, the contradiction is ours alone. We believe, contrary to what scripture is saying here, that we should be very public people when scripture is quite to the contrary in this matter. Remember, it said, “…ASPIRE to lead a QUIET life, attend to their (YOUR) own business, and work with their hands.”.

Let’s take a quick look at verse eight that ends this thought. It reads, “[8] Consequently the one who rejects this is not rejecting human authority but God!, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.”. What did this verse just say about rejection of what Paul is saying? It said, “…the one who rejects this is not rejecting H – U – M – A – N authority … but … G – O – D…”. This rejection is worth examining further.

Notice 1 Thessalonians verse eighteen in chapter two. It reads, “[18] For we wanted to come to you (I, Paul, in fact tried again and again) but Satan … thwarted us.”. This particular view is much downplayed in today’s American churches. Some believe we do not understand this verse properly. Some believe Paul’s comment here applied to different times and a different day. We are now, more refined and this seems overkill in today’s Christian world. Is it?

Barnes’ New Testament Notes reads, on verse 9. “Ye remember, brethren, our labor. Doubtless in the occupation of a tent-maker. – And travail. The word means wearisome labor.”

So, with this commentary, we can clearly realize that they worked day and night! With all that to keep from being a burden to those they were teaching and preaching to, they preached the Gospel!

It is reasonable to suppose that the statements in this chapter 2 were designed to meet a certain condition of things in the church there, and if so, we may learn something of the difficulties which the Thessalonians had to encounter, and of the objections which were made to Paul and to the gospel. It is often in this way that we can get the best view of the internal condition of a church referred to in the New Testament, not by direct statement respecting difficulties and errors in it, but by the character of the epistle sent to it.
