Also, after that phrase and a comma, we are told that those coming from heaven come from one end of heaven to the other.

He ( Jesus ) explained or interpreted the Old Testament Scriptures to them. Probably he showed them that their notions of the Messiah were not according to the Scriptures.

This tells us that what they expected is not what eventually happened in the reality of how it truly was.
